The first few months and years are the most testing times in any organisation's life and I would like to sincerely thank all of you for standing with us during this time. 

We have achieved some important goals during this short time and InShaAllah we have a very long way to go. 

APPS has become a global name today and its echoes are resonating in 5 continents of the world. 

We will together take this organisation to those heights that will make our future generations proud. InShaAllah

APPS UK MEETING WITH THE PRESIDENT OF PAKISTAN

APPS UK MEETING WITH THE PRESIDENT OF PAKISTAN:

Dr Usman Khan, Chair APPS UK, met his excellency, Dr Arif Alvi, President Islamic Republic of Pakistan, in Awan-I- Sadar on Wednesday 1st December.

Mr Sajid Hyder Yaldrum, Joint Secretary Health, Dr Imtiaz Ali Memon, Deputy Director Institutions were also in attendance.

Dr Usman informed his excellency about APPS UK. Interestingly, his excellency told him that Governor Punjab had already updated his Excellency about APPS UK & president was fully aware of our extensive work both in UK & Pakistan.

His Excellency inquired how his office and ministry of health can help APPS UK.

They discussed regarding government land to be given to ex-patriates cheaply to build medical facilities and tax free import of medical equipment.

His Excellency suggested that as it takes years to build a medical facility, we should also think about playing our part in improving the existing health facilities and adopting the hospitals and converting them from secondary care to tertiary care hospitals. 

They also discussed President & Prime Ministers involvement in improving the image of nursing. President said that they have and will encourage the youth to take up the profession. Pakistan is short of Nine Hundred Thousand Nurses (900,000). President informed me that at present Pakistan produces 20,000 nurses a year. We discussed increasing the capacity and reducing the training years and also incorporating virtual training.

They further discussed Pakistani companies getting involved in providing reusable and disposable equipment to NHS. 

They also discussed with his excellency regarding recognition of FCPS by Middle Eastern countries in detail. His Excellency agreed to use his good offices to help resolve this issue.

World Day of Remembrance: Road Traffic Victims 21st November

 Road Traffic Accidents

International prevalence

Every year the lives of approximately 1.3 million people are cut short as a result of a road traffic crash.

Between 20 and 50 million more people suffer non-fatal injuries, with many incurring a disability as a result of their injury.

More than half of all road traffic deaths are among vulnerable road users: pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.

93% of the world's fatalities on the roads occur in low- and middle-income countries, even though these countries have approximately 60% of the world's vehicles.

Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5-29 years.

Prevalence in Pakistan

According to the latest WHO data published in 2018 Road Traffic Accidents Deaths in Pakistan reached 30,046 or 2.42% of total deaths.

In this report, the WHO estimated that in Pakistan, RTAs result in 14.3 deaths per 100,000 population, which makes RTA fatalities an important public health issue that needs to be addressed immediately.

Risk factors

Speeding

Driving under the influence of alcohol and other psychoactive substances

Nonuse of motorcycle helmets, seat-belts, and child restraints

Distracted driving

Unsafe road infrastructure

Unsafe vehicles

Inadequate post-crash care

Inadequate law enforcement of traffic laws

How to Prevent

Road traffic injuries can be prevented. Governments need to take action to address road safety in a holistic manner. This requires involvement from multiple sectors such as transport, police, health, education, and actions that address the safety of roads, vehicles, and road users.

The Safe System approach is essential to eliminate fatal crashes and reduce serious injuries. Effective interventions have to be designed include designing safer infrastructure and incorporating road safety features into land-use and transport planning, improving the safety features of vehicles, improving post-crash care for victims of road crashes, setting and enforcing laws relating to key risks, and raising public awareness.
